There are some jobs a hound just can't do

Rained on and off most of the day so for the dogs it is was a Cat in the Hat day. I decided that I would fold the laundry with Marmaduke and Cody in the bedroom. As soon as I dumped the contents of the laundry basket on the bed it was an all out free for all. Marmaduke grabbed a towel and took off to the other side of the room. I called him back and exchanged the towel for a treat. Cody said "Wow, I can play this game!" He grabbed the towel and ran the opposite way. And that is how it went for the next few minutes. Finally had them both down and practiced our downs and sits for treats. Then I loaded the laundry back in the basket. Rainy days and bored dogs don't make good company for folding laundry. With the laundry out of the way, I laid down on the bed and Cody jumped up on one side and Marmaduke on the other. Two big soft hearted dogs doing what they do best, hanging out and enjoying a lazy rainy afternoon with their family.

Our not so little Marmaduke

Duke is a big boy with a big soft heart. He is a very big and very sweet baby. When he gets to know you he talks to you, voicing his opinions on being left alone, on not getting enough play time, on wanting more cuddle time. He loves people and he loves being the center of attention. I don't know how anybody could spend an afternoon with this big goofy dog and not end up laughing and seeing the brighter side of life. His voice is deep and handsome but not well suited for apartment living or anybody who finds the intensity of a hound's voice annoying. He loves to be chased and to play fetch. He is great with other dogs and corrects injustices with his voice. He is crate trained but prefers sleeping on a couch or in a bed. He is not aggressive with his toys or foods but sometimes forgets that he is a big boy when he plays. There is not a mean bone in this dog's body. He is a bundle of energy, joy and love.

Freedom fighter/Peacemaker/Kelly

We have a policy that the younger dogs are crated (under 2) when we are not home. This keeps them out of trouble and safe. Kelly has proven his ability to stay in a confined area for long periods of time. He has also proven his trustworthiness and reliability when left alone in the house. He has earned the right to remain uncrated overnight but he is still crated when we leave the house. Over time Kelly has figured out how to work the latch on his crate and he simply lets himself out when he feels confined. Today he decided that he was going to free all the dogs. So when we came home and opened the door out spilled a pack of dogs. Everything in the house was orderly and in place. Kelly is the peacemaker. He tries to make all the dogs happy. If they want to play, he plays. They want to sleep, he cuddles. If you pick up the leash, he is ready for walk. Mid afternoon nap count him in!

Kelly goes to the Vet

Kelly rode nicely in the car on the way to the vet. He was updated on shots, heartworm and lyme tested as well as examined. His age was determined to be young adult 1-2 years old. His house manners suggest 2, his play with the other dogs suggest 1 and his teeth say "Brush me!" He behaved impeccably. His next visit is Oct 1st for his neutering. As happy and go lucky as always.

Hidden treasures

All of us have been places before that have frightened us and made us act in ways we didn't think capable. I can only imagine that is the exact place where Kelly found himself the last three months. Scared, alone, unsure of his surroundings and defensive. He came to trust the staff at the pound but not the people coming in to meet him. Which explains the very reason he languished for so long without a home.

I could only wish that half of our own dogs were as easy going, laid back and had a personality as adjustable as Kelly's. At the pound he was cage aggressive. Here he barks to alert us if a stranger comes down the driveway but once he is told it is okay than he becomes their best friend.

Kelly plays hard with the dogs that play hard but just as easily  lies down and lets the more submissive dogs roll and play with him. Even when a dog becomes aggressive with him he remains unfazed and ignores the inappropriate behavior.

He marked in the house three times on the first day. Each time he was verbally corrected and led outside. He has not marked or eliminated in the house since. He is scheduled to be neutered on Oct. 1, 2008.

He is reliable in the house for the length of a workday with no incidents of destructive behavior or problems. He also sleeps well crated or loose and is appropriate.

Kelly is learning his sit and down at the moment. He likes to be around his family and will go out and then wait to be let back in. When he is in he finds a spot and lies down and waits patiently for attention to be given. In the evening he will curl up on the couch and roll over on his back and snuggle.

He is affectionate, mild mannered and loving. He has shown no signs of food or toy aggression and allows you to remove his food bowl as well as his toys with no issue. He shows no signs of aggression toward the other dogs when they take a toy from him.

He has his first vet visit on Tues. We will have a better idea then of his age.

This dog is a keeper. He will always be welcome here and will stay on as long as it takes to find the right home for him!

Kelly... what a gem!

Kelly has resided so long in a shelter that he forgot what it was like to run and play. It didn't take him long to bounce back. This is one happy go lucky dog. He is an absolute gem. Mild mannered. Kelly plays well with a pack of dogs. He is  people oriented and quiet.

He will not be available for adoption until after Oct 1, 2008 as he needs to be neutered and updated on routine shots. He walks well on the leash. Although he does not know any basic commands he will be taught them by the time he is adopted. He is crate trained and working on being housebroken. If you think you are interested in this dog and would like to get to know him drop us an email. He is a very happy and devoted dog.  Thank you to Janet Rice and Roger McNerney for sponsoring Kelly. You have made a huge difference in his life! It is the gift that will keep on giving.

What was once lost has been found

On Sunday Daisy looked to have found her forever home, but alas being the hound she is she had one thing in mind...run run run. She managed to jump a 5 foot wooden fence twice. Being a responsible person and knowing Daisy would continue to scale the fence she called several times for advice on what to do as she loved the dog and wanted to keep her...but also do right by the dog. After much thought she returned the dog to our care, unfortunately about 3 hours after returning to our house she managed to get out of our 3 fences that we have, the tallest being a 6 foot no climb horse fence. From 9:15 Sunday night until Tuesday evening we searched out property, made phone calls and drove around looking for her. We were informed she was found.

Lucky for her she is being adopted by the family that found her, giving her a good home.

It is always a good day when a dog gets a second chance, third chance, and even a fourth chance at life!

One less dog Ft Drum has to euthanize!

Here is Daisy with a responsible dog lover :)

Daisy, D2 update

She amazes me with her intelligence and willingness to learn. She has made such huge strides since she came. She has been reliable left alone in a room for hours without any destructive behavior. She is starting her crate training and is completely housebroken. This is one of the sweetest, kindest dogs you will ever meet.

Relax

Working on some Tricks

Who am I?

I was picked up as a stray in the Town of Watson in Lewis County and brought to the Lewis County Humane Society. They thought I might have belonged to a coyote hunter but nobody ever claimed me. They named me Sheila and they loved me and took great care of me until I was adopted at the end of July. My new home named me Daisy.

I was in my adoptive home less than a week and they turned me in to the Fort Drum Vet Clinic because they said I was destructive and I ran away. Amanda at Fort Drum thought I could go to a foster home so I could work on some issues and try to find a forever home. They already have a Daisy here and boy is it confusing when neither one of us know who they are talking to. So they call me D2 short for Daisy #2.

I am spayed, housebroken and I am about 1.5 to 2 years old. I might know how to hunt coyotes and raccoons. I love treeing wild animals and baying to let everyone know what is going on. It isn't that I don't want to stick around my people it is just that I have so much fun chasing scents that I forget where I am supposed to be.

Sheila, Daisy, D2 doesn't a dog deserve its own name?

This dog is an absolute sweetheart! She has been bounced in and out of animal shelters and is looking for a permanent home. She is loving and attentive to children, loves to play, snuggle on the couch and have her belly scratched. She is unreliable off lead at this point because of her tendency to follow scents (exactly what her genes tell her to do). She is headstrong on the collar but walks great on a harness. She has been working on her obedience and can sit, come and lie down in controlled settings. Because of her history she has some separation anxiety and can be destructive if she feels insecure. We have worked extensively with her on this issue since she has been here and she has come a long way in a short time. She has a very strong hunting instinct so she is unreliable outside alone even in a fenced yard. Her energy level is moderate. She plays very well with a variety of dogs. She is less sure of cats but seems to coexist with them. This dog is smart, loyal and has a great sense of humor. She is looking for someone who has the time to devote to her and is willing to help her work through some of her issues.

The Adoptable Dogs
