We have a policy that the younger dogs are crated (under 2) when we are not home. This keeps them out of trouble and safe. Kelly has proven his ability to stay in a confined area for long periods of time. He has also proven his trustworthiness and reliability when left alone in the house. He has earned the right to remain uncrated overnight but he is still crated when we leave the house. Over time Kelly has figured out how to work the latch on his crate and he simply lets himself out when he feels confined. Today he decided that he was going to free all the dogs. So when we came home and opened the door out spilled a pack of dogs. Everything in the house was orderly and in place. Kelly is the peacemaker. He tries to make all the dogs happy. If they want to play, he plays. They want to sleep, he cuddles. If you pick up the leash, he is ready for walk. Mid afternoon nap count him in!
